Chen Ruo Bing wurde 1970 in Nantong, China, geboren. Er begann seine künstlerische Laufbahn mit einer klassischen Ausbildung in chinesischer Tuschmalerei, Kalligrafie und Philosophie in Hangzhou. Von 1988 bis 1991 studierte er an der Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. 1992 zog er nach Deutschland, um an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf bei Gotthard Graubner zu studieren; er schloss dort 1998 ab.
Seine abstrakten Gemälde zeichnen sich durch sanfte Farbraumkompositionen aus – Tonräume, die Licht und Raum meditativ erforschen. Chen verbindet dabei ästhetische Prinzipien aus Ost und West: klassische chinesische Leere-Natur-Konzeptionen treffen auf moderne Farbfeldmalerei. Typisch sind geometrische Strukturen, dezente Farbverläufe und eine innere Leuchtkraft, die an Rothko erinnert.
Seit 2000 erhielt er zahlreiche Residenzen – unter anderem bei der Josef & Anni Albers Foundation in den USA und Einrichtungen in Süddeutschland, Korea, Irland und Italien. Seine Werke wurden weltweit in Museen, Galerien und auf bedeutenden Kunstmessen gezeigt. Chen lebt und arbeitet in Düsseldorf.
Chen Ruo Bing was born in 1970 in Nantong, China. He began his artistic career with a classical education in Chinese ink painting, calligraphy and philosophy in Hangzhou. From 1988 to 1991, he studied at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. In 1992, he moved to Germany to study under Gotthard Graubner at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where he graduated in 1998.
His abstract paintings are characterised by soft colour space compositions – tonal spaces that meditatively explore light and space. Chen combines aesthetic principles from East and West: classical Chinese concepts of emptiness and nature meet modern colour field painting. Typical features are geometric structures, subtle colour gradients and an inner luminosity reminiscent of Rothko.
Since 2000, he has been awarded numerous residencies – including at the Josef & Anni Albers Foundation in the USA and institutions in southern Germany, Korea, Ireland and Italy. His works have been shown worldwide in museums, galleries and at major art fairs. Chen lives and works in Düsseldorf.
