Luca Lazar, gebürtig Luka Lasareishvili, wurde am 14. November 1957 in Tbilisi in Georgien geboren. Er absolvierte ein Kunststudium an der Staatlichen Kunstakademie Tbilissi (1976–1982) und begann seine Karriere in den 1980er Jahren als freier Künstler.
1985 bis 1988 lebte und arbeitete er in Moskau, anschließend folgte ein Studienjahr in Paris. 1989 kam er auf Einladung des Fridericianums in Kassel nach Deutschland. Bis 2003 war er in Köln ansässig, wo er sich künstlerisch intensiv weiterentwickelte. Während dieser Zeit lehrte er ab 1997 als Gastdozent an der Europäischen Kunstakademie in Trier.
Seit 2003 lebt und arbeitet Luca Lazar in New York. Seine Arbeiten umfassen Malerei, Installation, Objekt-, Video- und Medienkunst. Bekannt ist er vor allem für seine minimalistischen Abstraktionen, die er in Serien wie Moving Stills, The White Curtain oder One-liners entwickelt hat – sie explorieren visuelle Strukturen, Rhythmus, Bewegung und die Wahrnehmung von Raum und Zeit.
Luca Lazar, born Luka Lasareishvili, was born on 14 November 1957 in Tbilisi, Georgia. He studied art at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts (1976–1982) and began his career as a freelance artist in the 1980s.
From 1985 to 1988, he lived and worked in Moscow, followed by a year of study in Paris. In 1989, he came to Germany at the invitation of the Fridericianum in Kassel. Until 2003, he was based in Cologne, where he continued to develop intensively as an artist. During this time, he taught as a guest lecturer at the European Art Academy in Trier from 1997 onwards.
Luca Lazar has lived and worked in New York since 2003. His works include painting, installation, object, video and media art. He is best known for his minimalist abstractions, which he has developed in series such as Moving Stills, The White Curtain and One-liners – they explore visual structures, rhythm, movement and the perception of space and time.
