Iwona Liegmann wurde 1963 in Gdańsk geboren. Sie absolvierte ihr Malerei-Studium 1993 an der Nikolaus-Kopernikus-Universität in Toruń und vertiefte ihre Ausbildung 1995–1996 an der Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, Schottland. 2015 promovierte sie zum Thema „Emocjonalność a banał“.
Zentrales Thema ihrer künstlerischen Arbeit ist das Verhältnis zwischen Mensch und Tier, oft mit einem kritischen Blick auf die Normalisierung von Tierleid. Stilistisch vereint sie Malerei, Collage und Assemblage – häufig übermalt sie alte Leinwände, schafft Texturen und Objekte, die Form und Materialität vermittels Farbe, Stoff und gefundenem Papier neu interpretieren.
Iwona Liegmann präsentierte ihre Arbeiten in Städten wie Toruń, Peking, London und Warschau. Sie lebt und arbeitet in Toruń.
Iwona Liegmann was born in Gdańsk in 1963. She completed her studies in painting at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń in 1993 and furthered her education at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, Scotland, from 1995 to 1996. In 2015, she received her doctorate with a thesis on ‘Emocjonalność a banał’ (Emotionality and Banality).
The central theme of her artistic work is the relationship between humans and animals, often with a critical view of the normalisation of animal suffering. Stylistically, she combines painting, collage and assemblage – she often paints over old canvases, creating textures and objects that reinterpret form and materiality through paint, fabric and found paper.
Iwona Liegmann has presented her work in cities such as Toruń, Beijing, London and Warsaw. She lives and works in Toruń.
