Fred Thieler wurde 1916 in Königsberg geboren. Er war ein bedeutender Vertreter des Informel und wechselte in seiner Malerei zunächst von figurativen Darstellungen zu formlosen, gestisch-dynamischen Farbflächen, die von Bewegungsimpulsen und Materialexperimenten leben.
Er studierte ab 1946 Malerei an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in München bei Carl Caspar und verbrachte Arbeitsaufenthalte in Holland und Paris, wo er u.a. im „Atelier 17“ wirkte. In den 1950er Jahren beteiligte er sich an der Gruppe ZEN 49 und wurde Mitglied der Neuen Gruppe München sowie des Deutschen Künstlerbundes. Von 1959 bis 1981 lehrte er an der Hochschule der Künste in Berlin und hatte auch eine Gastprofessur in Minneapolis.
Thieler erhielt u.a. den Lovis-Corinth-Preis und das Bundesverdienstkreuz. Zudem stiftete er den Fred-Thieler-Preis für Malerei für junge Künstler.
Fred Thieler verstarb am 6. Juni 1999 in Berlin.
Fred Thieler was born in Königsberg in 1916. He was an important representative of Informel and initially shifted in his painting from figurative representations to formless, gestural, dynamic areas of colour that thrive on impulses of movement and experiments with materials.
He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Carl Caspar from 1946 onwards and spent periods working in Holland and Paris, where he was active in ‘Atelier 17’, among other places. In the 1950s, he participated in the ZEN 49 group and became a member of the Neue Gruppe München and the Deutscher Künstlerbund. From 1959 to 1981, he taught at the Berlin University of the Arts and also held a visiting professorship in Minneapolis.
Thieler received the Lovis Corinth Prize and the Federal Cross of Merit, among other awards. He also established the Fred Thieler Prize for Painting for young artists.
Fred Thieler died on 6 June 1999 in Berlin.
