Chidi Kwubiri, geboren 1966 in Umuahia (Nigeria), erlangte durch seine markante, pulsartig-pointillistische Maltechnik, aber auch seine Rolle als kultureller Brückenbauer Anerkennung.

Kwubiri kam Anfang der 1990er Jahre nach Deutschland und studierte ab 1993 Freie Kunst an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Nach dem Tod seines ersten Lehrers Michael Buthe wechselte er in die Klasse von A. R. Penck, dessen Meisterschüler er 2002 wurde. Seit dem Jahr 2000 lebte und arbeitete Kwubiri im historischen Walzwerk in Pulheim bei Köln.

Sein unverwechselbarer Stil basierte auf einer modernen Interpretation des Pointillismus. Mittels einer dynamischen Dripping-Technik trug er unzählige Farbtropfen rhythmisch auf großformatige Leinwände auf, die sich zu meist figurativen Motiven zusammensetzten. Seine Werke beschäftigten sich intensiv mit gesellschaftspolitischen Fragen wie Identität, Migration und Würde. Große Bekanntheit im deutschsprachigen Raum erlangte er, als er das MISEREOR-Hungertuch für die Fastenaktion 2017/2018 unter dem Titel „Ich bin, weil du bist“ gestaltete.

Er verstarb 2025 in Pulheim.

Chidi Kwubiri, born in 1966 in Umuahia (Nigeria), gained recognition for his distinctive, pulsating pointillist painting style, as well as for his role as a cultural bridge-builder.

Kwubiri came to Germany in the early 1990s and began studying fine art at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1993. Following the death of his first teacher, Michael Buthe, he transferred to the class of A. R. Penck, becoming his master student in 2002. Since 2000, Kwubiri lived and worked in the historic rolling mill in Pulheim near Cologne.

His distinctive style was based on a modern interpretation of Pointillism. Using a dynamic dripping technique, he rhythmically applied countless drops of paint to large-format canvases, which came together to form mostly figurative motifs. His works dealt intensively with socio-political issues such as identity, migration, and dignity. He gained widespread recognition in German-speaking countries when he designed the MISEREOR Lenten cloth for the 2017/2018 Lenten campaign under the title “I Am Because You Are.”

He passed away in 2025 in Pulheim (Germany).
