GAMA wurde 1977 in Baotou in der Inneren Mongolei geboren. Er wuchs in einer traditionellen Nomadenfamilie auf und kam erst im Kindesalter mit dem urbanen Leben in Berührung. Nach seinem Studium der Ölmalerei an der Central Academy of Fine Arts in Peking setzte er seine Ausbildung in Deutschland fort – als Meisterschüler von Gustav Kluge an der Kunsthochschule Karlsruhe. Seit 2007 lebt und arbeitet GAMA in Berlin.
Seine farbintensiven Gemälde bewegen sich zwischen Realität und Fantasie. Sie vereinen Motive aus der mongolischen Kultur, dem Schamanismus, Buddhismus und westlichen Märchenbildern. Immer wieder tauchen geheimnisvolle Figuren, hybride Wesen und symbolhafte Landschaften auf – oft humorvoll und rätselhaft zugleich.
GAMA was born in Baotou in Inner Mongolia in 1977. He grew up in a traditional nomadic family and only came into contact with urban life as a child. After studying oil painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, he continued his training in Germany – as a master student of Gustav Kluge at the Karlsruhe Art Academy. GAMA has lived and worked in Berlin since 2007.
His intensely coloured paintings move between reality and fantasy. They combine motifs from Mongolian culture, shamanism, Buddhism and Western fairy tales. Mysterious figures, hybrid beings and symbolic landscapes appear again and again – often humorous and enigmatic at the same time.
