Gerhard Hoehme wurde am 5. Februar 1920 in Greppin bei Dessau geboren und gilt als ein wichtiger Vertreter des deutschen Informel. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg studierte er ab 1948 an der Kunsthochschule Burg Giebichenstein in Halle und wechselte später an die Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Dort kam er in Kontakt mit internationalen Positionen der Avantgarde und entwickelte eine zunehmend eigenständige, experimentelle Bildsprache.
In den 1950er-Jahren war Hoehme maßgeblich an der Entwicklung des Informel in Deutschland beteiligt. Er war Mitbegründer der „Gruppe 53“ und stellte unter anderem auf der documenta II in Kassel aus. Seine Arbeiten verbanden malerische Geste mit installativen Elementen und erweiterten das klassische Tafelbild hin zum Objekt im Raum.
Ab 1960 war Hoehme Professor für Malerei an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, wo er zahlreiche jüngere Künstlergenerationen prägte. Er lebte und arbeitete in Neuss-Selikum, wo er am 29. Juni 1989 verstarb.
Gerhard Hoehme was born on 5 February 1920 in Greppin near Dessau and is considered an important representative of German Informel. After the Second World War, he studied at the Burg Giebichenstein Art College in Halle from 1948 and later transferred to the Düsseldorf Art Academy. There he came into contact with international avant-garde positions and developed an increasingly independent, experimental visual language.
In the 1950s, Hoehme played a key role in the development of Informel in Germany. He was a co-founder of ‘Gruppe 53’ and exhibited at documenta II in Kassel, among other venues. His works combined painterly gestures with installation elements and expanded the classic panel painting into an object in space.
From 1960 onwards, Hoehme was professor of painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where he influenced numerous younger generations of artists. He lived and worked in Neuss-Selikum, where he died on 29 June 1989.
