Gustav Deppe wurde am 12. September 1913 in Essen geboren und prägte als Maler und Grafiker die deutsche Nachkriegskunst. Er studierte in Dortmund und gründete 1948 die Künstlergruppe „Junger Westen“, die abstrakte und industriegeprägte Bildsprachen aus dem Ruhrgebiet förderte .
Deppe lehrte von 1953 bis 1977 in Dortmund und erhielt verschiedene Auszeichnungen, darunter den Wilhelm-Mognér-Preis. Seine Werke, oft inspiriert von Zechenlandschaften, Strommasten und Industriebauten, zeigten eine expressive, teils informelle, teils gegenständlich-abstrahierte Handschrift.
1959 nahm er an der documenta II in Kassel teil. Später übernahm er eine Professur an der FH Dortmund und lebte zuletzt im Ruhrgebiet. Gustav Deppe starb 1999 in Witten.
Gustav Deppe was born in Essen on 12 September 1913 and made his mark on German post-war art as a painter and graphic artist. He studied in Dortmund and founded the artists‘ group ‘Junger Westen’ in 1948, which promoted abstract and industrial visual languages from the Ruhr region.
Deppe taught in Dortmund from 1953 to 1977 and received various awards, including the Wilhelm Mognér Prize. His works, often inspired by colliery landscapes, electricity pylons and industrial buildings, showed an expressive, partly informal, partly figurative-abstract signature.
In 1959, he took part in documenta II in Kassel. He later took up a professorship at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts and finally lived in the Ruhr region. Gustav Deppe died in Witten in 1999.
