Showichi Kaneda wurde im Jahr 1970 in Kyoto, Japan geboren. Er studierte Malerei an der Kyoto City University of Arts, wo er 1995 sein postgraduales Studium abschloss. Seitdem lebt und arbeitet er in Kyoto. Zudem ist er seit 2009 als Dozent für Malerei an seiner Alma Mater tätig.
Kanedas Werk bewegt sich an der Schnittstelle von Malerei, Skulptur und Design. Mit Materialien wie Fiberglas, Polyesterharz, Öl- und Autolacken sowie Aufklebern entwickelt er ästhetisch kraftvolle Arbeiten, die häufig von industriellen Formen und Alltagslandschaften inspiriert sind. Serien wie „Human’s Own“ und „Plastic Construction“ zeigen sein Interesse an Geschwindigkeit, Konsumkultur und der Wechselwirkung zwischen Oberfläche und Bedeutung.
Seine Arbeiten wurden in zahlreichen Ausstellungen in Japan und international gezeigt, zuletzt auch in einer Kooperation mit dem Modehaus Balenciaga, bei der Kaneda eine Formel‑1-inspirierte Skulptur schuf.
Er lebt und arbeitet in Kyoto.
Showichi Kaneda was born in Kyoto, Japan, in 1970. He studied painting at Kyoto City University of Arts, where he completed his postgraduate studies in 1995. Since then, he has lived and worked in Kyoto. He has also been a lecturer in painting at his alma mater since 2009.
Kaneda’s work lies at the intersection of painting, sculpture and design. Using materials such as fibreglass, polyester resin, oil and car paints, and stickers, he develops aesthetically powerful works that are often inspired by industrial forms and everyday landscapes. Series such as ‘Human’s Own’ and ‘Plastic Construction’ reveal his interest in speed, consumer culture and the interaction between surface and meaning.
His works have been shown in numerous exhibitions in Japan and internationally, most recently in a collaboration with the fashion house Balenciaga, for which Kaneda created a Formula 1-inspired sculpture.
He lives and works in Kyoto.
