ter Hell (eigentlich Horst‑Günter Hell) wurde 1954 in Norden geboren und ist ein deutscher Maler sowie Aktions‑ und Videokünstler. Er studierte von 1976 bis 1981 an der Hochschule der Künste Berlin bei Fred Thieler und war Mitbegründer der Berliner Gruppe 1/61 im Jahr 1979, die sich als rebellisches Gegenstück zur damals populären „Jungen Wilden“ verstand.
In seinen Arbeiten vereint ter Hell gestisch-abstrakte Farbformen des deutschen Informel und des New Yorker Expressionismus mit provokativen Elementen der Graffiti‑ und Straßenkultur. Mit Sprühdosen bringt er Satzfragmente, Wortzeichen oder slogans in seine Bilder ein und schafft so eine expressive Bildwelt voller subkultureller Referenzen. Seine Werke spielen mit Dekonstruktion – verzerrte Leinwände, schiefe Rahmen und textuelle Spuren verweben politische Haltung und ästhetisches Statement.
1982 erhielt er ein PS1-Stipendium in New York, gefolgt von Auszeichnungen wie dem Kunstpreis „Glockengasse“ und dem Philip Morris‑Preis „Dimensionen IV“ im Jahr 1983. Zahlreiche Einzelausstellungen seit den späten 1970er Jahren – unter anderem in Berlin, Köln und New York – machten ihn international bekannt.

ter Hell (born Horst-Günter Hell) was born in Norden in 1954 and is a German painter, performance artist and video artist. He studied at the Berlin University of the Arts under Fred Thieler from 1976 to 1981 and co-founded the Berlin group 1/61 in 1979, which saw itself as a rebellious counterpart to the then popular ‘Junge Wilde’ (Young Wild Ones).
In his works, ter Hell combines gestural abstract colour forms of German Informel and New York Expressionism with provocative elements of graffiti and street culture. Using spray cans, he incorporates sentence fragments, word symbols or slogans into his paintings, creating an expressive visual world full of subcultural references. His works play with deconstruction – distorted canvases, crooked frames and textual traces interweave political stance and aesthetic statement.
In 1982, he received a PS1 scholarship in New York, followed by awards such as the ‘Glockengasse’ art prize and the Philip Morris ‘Dimensionen IV’ prize in 1983. Numerous solo exhibitions since the late 1970s – including in Berlin, Cologne and New York – have made him internationally renowned.
